Here are a few pictures of the 2000 Pan American Intercollegiate in Milwaukee. As an added bonus... these photos are taken by (guess who) me!

The 2000 Pan Am was held at the Four Points Sheraton in Milwaukee. The facilities were rather nice. Here's a photo of the tournament room. The people are crowded around the top table in the center of the room (not visible).

In round 4, #5 seed Stanford clashed with #4 seed Toronto A on table 2. Starting with board 1 in the distance: IM Yan Teplitsky vs FM Philip Wang (Stanford players on right side of table), IM Igor Zugic vs NM Etan Ilfeld, NM Bryan Lamb vs NM Jordy Mont-Reynaud, and Kit-Sun Ng vs NM Michael Aigner (taking this photo). Stanford won the match 2.5-1.5 (Mont-Reynaud and Aigner won, Ilfeld drew).

So having disposed of the #4 seed, we earned a date on table 1 in round 5. Our opponents were the top rated team from University of Texas at Dallas. Starting with board 1 in the foreground, the matchups were: FM Philip Wang (Stanford on the left) vs GM Yuri Shulman, NM Etan Ilfeld vs NM Andrew Whatley, NM Jordy Mont-Reynaud vs NM Andrei Zaremba, NM Michael Aigner (again the photographer) vs NM Dennis Rylander. Unfortunately, Dallas won the match 3.5-0.5 (Mont-Reynaud drew) and went on to win the Pan Am title.

Here's another view of the Stanford brain trust in deep thought. Perhaps we would have had better luck playing GM Yuri Shulman (on right) in a simul!

The hotel was nice. Outside, though, was another story! It snowed much of the tournament. Hence snow covered the trees and well as the ground. The temperatures were also appropriately cold (wind chills below 0 Fahrenheit). Understandably, nobody wanted to leave the hotel--even to get something to eat!

After the chess tournament ended, I spent a few days in Chicago with my parents. Here are just a few pictures of those days. Please note the winter weather :-)
